The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare for all to see how, in the world’s richest country, we cannot make or get the basic goods we need to manage a crisis.
Yes, the Trump administration’s mismanagement has made the health and economic damage worse. But underlying it are structural weaknesses that would have undermined even a competent president.
The hyperglobalization delivered by decades of corporate-rigged trade pacts has meant mass outsourcing of U.S. manufacturing capacity and extended, brittle supply chains that have failed.
