De minimis loophole closing permanently?
When Rethink Trade launched, one of our first efforts was trying to close the de minimis loophole, the provision that allows goods valued under $800 to enter the United States while evading duties and inspections. Four million de minimis packages come into the country daily. These imports are linked to the fentanyl supply chain and other unsafe or counterfeit goods. The elimination of de minimis treatment for all commercial goods was Rethink Trade’s position from the start, which has been ridiculed as overambitious—until now.
