Rethink Trade Director Lori Wallach joined NPR’s On Point with Meghna Chakrabarti this morning to discuss what is at stake in tomorrow’s Supreme Court oral arguments on whether the president has unilateral authority to impose tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
The case, which will be argued on November 5, could redefine the balance of powers between Congress and the executive branch and set a precedent for how future presidents may use tariffs to reward allies or target perceived adversaries.
In the interview, Wallach explains:
* The legal question before the Court
* How the Court’s ruling could expand or restrict presidential power
* Why the outcome matters beyond trade policy
